Bring language and culture into every lesson

Use this adaptable planning guide to create meaningful opportunities for learners to communicate.

Plan a language lesson

Choose a purpose for communication

Start with something students might do with the language: introduce a family member, tell a short story, describe a celebration or ask for information. Write a clear learning goal in language students can understand.

Connect with learners’ experiences

Invite students to share what they already know. Use a picture, object, song or short text to connect the lesson to their interests and cultural experiences. Offer more than one way to participate.

Model and practise

Introduce a manageable set of useful words and expressions. Model how to use them, then let students practise with a partner. Provide visual prompts or sentence starters where useful.

Create a reason to use the language

Plan a paired or small-group task with a clear outcome, such as making an invitation or interviewing a classmate. Allow learners at different levels to contribute in different ways.

Notice progress and plan the next step

Ask students to show or explain one thing they can now do. Use a brief conversation, a drawing, a short recording or a piece of writing. Use what you learn to plan the next lesson.
